Microbial Evolution: Xenology (Apparently) Trumps Paralogy

چکیده
Within-genome gene duplication is generally considered the source of extra copies when higher dosage is required and a starting point for evolution of new function. A new study suggests that horizontal gene transfer can appear to play both roles.

The Mathematics of Xenology: Di-cographs, Symbolic Ultrametrics, 2-structures and Tree-representable Systems of Binary Relations
The concepts of orthology, paralogy, and xenology play a key role in molecular evolution. Orthology and paralogy distinguish whether a pair of genes originated by speciation or duplication. The corresponding binary relations on a set of genes form complementary cographs. Allowing more than two types of ancestral event types leads to symmetric symbolic ultrametrics. Horizontal gene transfer, whi...
متن کاملPartial Orthology, Paralogy and Xenology Relations - Satisfiability in terms of Di-Cographs
A variety of methods based on sequence similarity, reconciliation, synteny or functional characteristics, can be used to infer homology relations, that is, orthology, paralogy and xenology relations between genes of a given gene family G. The (inferred) homology relations might not cover each pair of genes and thus, provide only partial knowledge on the full set of homology relations. Moreover,...
متن کاملAncestral paralogs and pseudoparalogs and their role in the emergence of the eukaryotic cell
Gene duplication is a crucial mechanism of evolutionary innovation. A substantial fraction of eukaryotic genomes consists of paralogous gene families. We assess the extent of ancestral paralogy, which dates back to the last common ancestor of all eukaryotes, and examine the origins of the ancestral paralogs and their potential roles in the emergence of the eukaryotic cell complexity. A parsimon...
متن کاملReconstructing Gene Trees From Fitch's Xenology Relation
Two genes are xenologs in the sense of Fitch if they are separated by at least one horizontal gene transfer event. Horizonal gene transfer is asymmetric in the sense that the transferred copy is distinguished from the one that remains within the ancestral lineage. Hence xenology is more precisely thought of as a nonsymmetric relation: y is xenologous to x if y has been horizontally transferred ...
متن کاملComplex history of a chromosomal paralogy region: insights from amphioxus aromatic amino acid hydroxylase genes and insulin-related genes.
Aromatic amino acid hydroxylase (AAAH) genes and insulin-like genes form part of an extensive paralogy region shared by human chromosomes 11 and 12, thought to have arisen by tetraploidy in early vertebrate evolution. Cloning of a complementary DNA (cDNA) for an amphioxus (Branchiostoma floridae) hydroxylase gene (AmphiPAH) allowed us to investigate the ancestry of the human chromosome 11/12 pa...
